How did we get to where we are today?
It all started in 1974, when Tom O’Toole bought the original Beechworth Bakery building. But then again, it wasn’t yet the Beechworth Bakery; Tom continued with the name he had bought it under: the Ideal Café & Milk Bar. And only three years later he sold it again. So, really, it all began in 1984, when Tom bought the building for the second time. And this time he did call it the Beechworth Bakery.
Built in 1857, the original building was erected as single storey commercial premises, with a second storey and balcony added around 1900. Old legal documents reveal the premises have been home to a shoe shop, dining room and pastry shop.
That same year Tom also bought the drapers next door and extended the production and baking areas at the rear. He doubled the floor space and entrances for customers by opening up into the former drapery premises, and created an outdoor area on the sidewalk to extend seating.
Today Beechworth Bakery boasts six bakeries across Victoria and southern NSW, and is one of Australia’s greatest retail success stories. It has an annual turnover in excess of $14 million, serving well over 1 million customers per year.
But wait, there’s more…
Answering questions like, let’s say, ‘Things to do in Healesville?’, or ‘Where can you get free Internet access in Echuca?’ is part of our service. We make it our job to be helpful. (By the way, the closest free Internet access is right inside each of our bakeries…)
